Christina's Texas Story

Press Release

Date: Aug. 5, 2014

In my 21 years, I've been blessed with many role models.

But one thing they all have in common--from my very first role model, my grandfather, to the most recent, my own State Senator Wendy Davis--is their commitment to quality education. They both show how it can take you places you never thought you could go.

The son of a pool hall owner, my grandfather Jimmy was born in the Arkansas Ozarks in the 1930s and grew up poor during the Depression. After graduating from high school, he went off to fight in the Korean War.

When he returned to Arkansas, despite being a veteran, he faced prejudice about his humble beginnings. But Jimmy didn't let that stop him: he took advantage of the the G.I. Bill to go on to earn advanced degrees in linguistics and education, ultimately becoming a professor.

Throughout his career, my grandfather worked for the UN, the Ford Foundation and the Peace Corps, managing to squeeze in a Nobel Peace Prize in between for his work helping refugees in Southeast Asia.

But what was this language and linguistics teacher most proud of? That all six of his children earned college degrees--and four of them went on to become public school teachers.

My grandfather faced adversity and prejudice. But through his education, he achieved the American dream.

Although my grandfather passed away in 2012, I can still hear him telling me: "Christina, they can take away your home. They can take away your family. Car, dog, what have you… But no one can ever take away your education."

Education was and is the greatest priority for my family. It's one of the many opportunities they came to Texas to pursue.

As someone who calls Fort Worth home, I'm so lucky to be represented by Senator Davis, who truly understands how education can take you places you never thought you could go. And I'm working so that all Texans can benefit from her vision for it.

If quality education is your top priority, join me in supporting the candidate who will fight for it.
